Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco

The Monaco Grand Prix is a Formula One race held each year on the Circuit de Monaco. Run since 1929, it is widely considered to be one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world, alongside the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The race is held on a narrow course laid out in the streets of Monaco, with many elevation changes and tight corners as well as a tunnel, making it one of the most demanding tracks in Formula One. In spite of the relatively low average speeds, it is a dangerous place to race.

The day began with the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Race,  a 16 lap race, in which Rene Rast won for the second year running in a commanding lights-to-flag victory. Next up was the Renault 3.5 Formula Race,a 25 lap rae, which Australian Daniel Ricardo won for the second year.

Finally the main event was the 67th Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco. It was a thrilling spectacle, with Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and McLaren’s Jenson Button all separated by less than a second with 10 laps remaining – and all with a very real chance of winning. With Vettel's tires shot, 15 laps left and Alonso and Button on his shoulder, he rolled the dice. He did over 60 laps on a Pirelli tire that was supposed to last no more than 45.

Vitaly Petrov hammered the wall and with him thought unconscious in the cockpit, the safety car was dispatched. A red flag following the multiple-car incident on lap 69 stopped the race prematurely. The restart meant the chance to fit new tires for the five-lap sprint to the flag, and no one was going to beat Vettel over that.
